Topaz Fairie and a SBQ

I finally decided to go ahead and work on Topaz Fairie yesterday. I am glad I did because I made some progress on her. :)

Today's SBQ was suggested by Nancy and is:

What tips would you give to a new stitcher to help her stitch faster and neater while still keeping it enjoyable?

To a new stitcher my main advice would be to always count, re-count, and count again! There is nothing more discouraging than having to rip out stitches due to a small miscount. Another thing I would advise is keeping the length of your threads at a reasonable length. If it is too long it will get tangled up causing knots and just a big mess. My last piece of advice would be ...do not be afraid to wash your projects! I seldom have a problem with the flosses bleeding but I generally stitch with DMC. When I do use overdyed threads I take more care in washing them in cool water so they don't bleed.

Danielle-I was planning on finishing Trimming the Trees into a top for a wood box. I messed up and didn't leave enough room on the top and bottom to allow for coverage with the batting. When I cut my material for some reason I thought I needed a 4 x 6 inch piece when in fact that was the size of the top of my box. Ooops! :)

Could you stitch extra fabric around the edge for the "tuck under". The seam would run along the edge of the box and would not be very noticable.

I tried to tuck it under the edge but no matter how hard I tried to lace it under, it kept showing. I had enough on the sides but not on the top.

This trimming the tree is so cute, I'm glad you can still turn it into an ornie, but sorry you can't finish it as you wanted it...
Allie's stocking's a real beauty too. You make me realize that we don't have a single stocking here. I mean, a homemade one. Shame on me. You're inspiring me...
The Topaz Fairy is a beautiful project, but definitely more than I can chew personally. It makes it even more fun for me to see others dare tackling such a beautiful project... Thanks for sharing -and thank you for your kind comment on my blog. I see we have a second tiger mummy here. Lol!
Enjoy your week end!
